Chubby Hubby? The 5 day cure… with FMD

I live at the bottom of a ski hill. My husband and I were on the chair lift yesterday. I mentioned the 5 day FMD.

FMD stands for Fast Mimicking Diet

My husband has had more stress lately than ever. His body is retaining a few pounds. (In Ayurveda, Kapha types gain weight with stress. Pitta and Vata types lose weight with stress.)

My husband is used to seasonal detoxes. Yet, he hasn’t done a 5 day FMD.

What is  the 5 day FMD?

The Fast Mimicking Diet is reducing calories to 500-750 calories per day diet for 5 days.

What is happening in the body during a 5 Day of Fast Mimicking Diet (500-750 calories/day with 85% fat, 10% protein, and 5% carbs):

  • Autophagy and apoptotic cellular clearing/repair
  • Decrease oxidative stress and inflammation
  • Increase mental performance and BDNF (brain stem cells that create new neurons)
  • Removal of cancerous or precancerous cells – Increase immune system functioning
  • Increase lean tissue mass
  • Decrease in fat tissue
  • Rapid shifting into nutritional ketosis
  • Increase gene expression for long periods of time

Healing in Ayurveda is not something you only do when you are sick. It is something you do to prevent sickness in your future. In Ayurveda, the first method of healing is rest: rest includes fasting from thought, deed, word, and food. Calorie restriction means that you are eating less than 70% of what you normally eat – 500-800 calories – rather than the 2000-2500 calories. That puts the body into a fasting state.

In a fasting state, the cells enter autophagy – or “self-eating” – or catabolism. First, the cells clean house – digesting debris, viruses, bacteria, and other inefficiencies. Second, apoptosis or cell destruction happens when cells are too damaged to restore to a healthy state. Both are part of the recycling and cleanup process that rids your body of damaged cells, and optimizes your cells individually and as a collective system for the next phase of your life.

Autophagy and apoptosis are essential for healthy longevity… and also for self-renewal. The balance between an active life and a quiet reflection leads to a more meaningful life.

The well-fed cell isn’t worried about being efficient and recycling its components – it’s too busy growing and dividing. The overfed cell is trying to keep up with what is entering and exiting and is overwhelmed by food which causes cellular confusion. The under-fed cell is able to digest and optimize for future efficiencies and better performance.

Autophagy kicks in after not eating for around 16 hours, and accelerates, and after 3 days of fasting or severe calorie restriction, the body produces growth hormone and stem cells. Your body is meant to regenerate itself – but it can’t if you are always eating your normal amount of food everyday. 

The other major benefit that calorie restriction, or a fast mimicking diet, engenders a shift  into the parasympathetic state of fat metabolism. Your body learns to access energy from fat, rather than from craving food it doesn’t need.

Dr. Rao explains, “The Fasting Mimicking Diet never calls for completely fasting. The idea is to supply the body with just enough calories to feel satiated, but not full, while also allowing the body to enter gluconeogenesis, the process by which the body converts fat and other non-carbohydrates to glucose (i.e. body and mind fuel).”

This process of the body converting fat for energy is accelerated by eating most of your calories from fat, rather than carbs, which you are probably familiar with as the keto diet.
